I saw this month’s restaurant – Mother India – whilst driving past what was the 2017 winner – Sizzlers in Melton Road. Given it was so good and a members favourite I thought this would be an easy win for our club this month.
Inside the bar has been moved and the pool table was gone. The evening went downhill from here.
The waiter was pleasant but did not understand their food or drinks menu. I asked if they had a non-alcoholic lager, was told no. Later I noticed they had Cobra zero (non-alcoholic lager) on the drinks menu so asked did they had that. Yes. Hmm.
Poppadoms came and were nice enough; came with one bowl of onions. Chutney and Ratia were on most tables in decanters which put off one member as we weren’t sure how fresh they were.
The menu had more than the usual misspellings including spinash (spinach) and pawn (prawn),
Ordering took a while. Again, the waiter didn’t help as he didn’t know it. Mr Y asked for his usual chicken chana saag but was told it’s not on the menu so not possible. However, a second waiter then said they could make it.
Our mains order was:
- Chicken Karahi
- Chicken Tawa X 2
- Chicken Chana Saag
- Butter Chicken
No veg rice but Veg biriyani was offered; not sure what the difference is? Usual Naans and Boiled Rice were our sides.
The order was checked 3 times between two people; what could go wrong?
Chicken Chana Saag is Chicken, Chickpeas and Spinach. Mother India made it with Chicken Spinach and garden peas; however the taste was ok.
Chicken Karahi was too oily and not hot enough (temperature), similarly the butter Chicken suffered from being a little cold.
One chicken Tawa arrived OK. We were missing another; we waited and waited. The waiter said it was on its way. Mr X gave them the opportunity to admit it had been missed by the chef, but they carried on with the “its on its way” excuse. When it did arrive, it was a total disappointment – anything thrown together to get something out of the kitchen. Most of this dish ended up going back. It was taken off the bill – I hope they learn coming clean would have been a far better option for them.
Rice and Naans were OK but become inconsequential in the grand scale of failure at this restaurant.
A final update to scores occurred the following morning following illness by Mr X leaving this as the worst restaurant visited this year.
Leicester City council have not awarded any hygiene certificate yet; it shows as pending a visit. I hope the kitchens are better than the front of house!
Finally, beware – they are using reviews and stars from Sizzler’s past on their online reviews and Trip Advisor page.
What an utter disappointment. This is reflected in it being placed 2nd worst of all time (thats 104th in the rankings to date).
We have been fortunate this year, lots of top scores; this place reminds us how lucky we are in Leicester/Leicestershire with so many great places to get a great curry.
