Spice Club has been in Melton for many years but has recently taken over a building on Nottingham Street which was formerly the Mash Tub Pub.
There was plenty of parking at the rear which was free during our visit.
We were met by the manager Uzzal who was very friendly and asked us where we would like to sit.
We did notice when we first walked in that there is a small private dining area that would be ideal for a party of around 10 to 12 diners.
Uzzal took our drinks order as well as the statutory two poppadoms per person and their ‘finest’ pickle tray.
Please note they do not provide draft beer so were restricted to bottles of lager (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) which is quite unusual bearing in mind that this used to be an old pub.
The poppadoms were still warm (as we like) and crispy… the standard pickle tray was supplemented with lime pickle too.
The menu has the usual favourites along with some of their own signature dishes which though some seemed a little pricey at first did include a portion of pilau rice (which they were quite happy to swap for an alternative).
The mains were served nice and hot, the meat was plentiful and the sauce very tasty… we would say that their strength is on the hot side so take care when ordering and maybe ask for a sample to try… the madras was very hot and the vindaloo was one of the hottest we have had in the 84 previous Leicestershire restaurants we’ve visited over the last seven years.
There were a few other diners and we got the impression that this is a restaurant that is visited by many regulars as well as those visiting the town on business.
Overall the place was clean and well-kept, service attentive, the food very good and would definitely recommend to those wanting a decent curry when in the Melton area.
The price was a little more than our average (£30 per person including tip) but thought it was worth it as this restaurant is better than average.
