12A London Rd, Great Glen, Leicester LE8 9GF
31.8/40
For our July outing, the Leicester Curry Club headed to Satya in Great Glen, and it proved to be an excellent choice.
First impressions were very positive. There is plenty of parking, and the restaurant has been recently refurbished, creating a bright, airy atmosphere. One feature that immediately caught our attention was the open kitchen visible behind the bar area, which adds a nice sense of theatre and confidence in the food being prepared.
After ordering drinks, we were shown to our table. Satya offers a good selection of soft drinks, including non-alcoholic lager, whilst the only draught options are Hawkstone Lager and Hawkstone Cider. The staff explained that this is part of the restaurant’s commitment to supporting British farming, a theme that runs throughout the business.
As tradition demands, we began with the statutory ten poppadom’s and two pickle trays. The poppadom’s arrived warm, dry, crisp, and fresh, exactly as they should be.
The menu is extensive and includes all the familiar favourites. Our host was happy to answer plenty of questions and was particularly keen to point out that all of their meat and poultry come from local butchers, again reflecting their support for British farmers.
For the main course, the club ordered:
- Two Lamb Tawa’s (madras)
- One Chilli Lamb (mild)
- One Chilli Lamb (vindaloo)
- One Butter Chicken (mild)
The verdict from around the table was unanimous: the quality and tenderness of the meat were outstanding, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dishes.
To accompany the curries, we shared:
- Mushroom rice
- Plain rice
- Cheese and onion naan
- Peshwari naan
- Plain naan
For sports fans, Satya also has Sky Sports playing in the background, making it a comfortable venue for those who like to keep an eye on the scores while dining.
When the bill arrived, the total came to £175 for five people, which we felt represented good value for the quality of the food and the overall experience.
The messages I received the following morning from our members were mainly positive, especially about the food, but also a couple mentioned that although the restaurant had been refurbished, the shared toilet could do with an upgrade – please note this did not deter from our enjoyment of the night but is just abit of constructive feedback.
The score out of 40 based on the venue/surroundings/food/service/cost was 31.8… which is unfortunately a little lower than expected due to scores of 6, and 7.5 – this would have been alot more had the toilets been to the same standard as the restaurant.
Overall, this was another enjoyable Leicester Curry Club visit to a restaurant that serves excellent food and clearly takes pride in its commitment to supporting British farming and local suppliers.
Satya is certainly a venue we would be happy to recommend and revisit.
