The best-kept secret for Indian dining in Leicester today!!
Well, you certainly wouldn’t expect this place. So what is it???
Set on a trading estate in Thurmaston, it is a complex of artificial football and cricket pitches, a gymnasium, a children’s soft play, and a fantastic Indian restaurant.
The owners have certainly gone to town with this refurbishment of a huge industrial unit; not the most appealing of buildings at first glance, but seeing is believing; just ask for a tour, and you will be very impressed.
We found booking quite tricky as the website is a little confusing due to the different activities they offer. Maybe a little separation of brands is required, but please don’t let this put you off. Bookings are managed by OpenTable, which gives instant availability and confirmations, which we like.
This was undoubtedly going to be very different to what the members are accustomed to, but once we were all seated in the opulent restaurant, the concept became apparent. All very new and fresh, and our table overlooked one of the pitches behind huge glazed windows.
The staff were super welcoming, and the table was set very well with nice linen and crockery.
The very nice waitress that was looking after us introduced herself and took our drinks order. We then ordered poppadoms and pickle trays for the 5 members.
We ordered Karmos Chicken (hot), Himalayan Chicken (spicy), Lamb chops, and two “What a sizzler” of different strengths, along with steamed basmati rice and a selection of Naan breads.
All the food was freshly prepared and tasted great. Very little oil too – with a Gym and Sports pitches the sports members at What a Goal are being kept healthy too! All the main courses are recommended with no disappointments.
It is very rare that all Leicester Curry Club members agree on the standard of food and presentation, but here everything was perfect – and the portions were larger than in other restaurants too! We know – this was our 129th monthly outing, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Our last outing was to Twenty1 in Birstall, which we thought would be crowned the 2022 winner; however, What a Shot has just achieved a higher score and is now our leader this year. Well done to the owners and staff who have created something very different.
Will they maintain their crown for this year? Check back here to see the Octobers restaurant choice next month.
