This month of August 2021 Dear Readers, your intrepid and fearless reviewers ventured into the Northern climes of our county to the quaint market town of Loughborough to see what our collegiate cousins had on their doorstep to entice us away from more local establishments in the great metropolis of Leicester.
We elected to try The Mount Gurkha Nepalese Restaurant on Ashby Road and we are pleased to report that it was absolutely worth the effort taken and the expense of the extra mileage to undertake this expedition.
The Mount Gurkha on first impression has an unimposing façade on a busy road out of Loughborough next to the all-pervasive Sainsbury’s supermarket, but once inside it stretches back, belying its narrow appearance and revealing a comfortable layout for much more than a handful of diners.
The service was attentive and it wasn’t long before we had our drinks and papadums with their obligatory pickle tray accompaniment while we studied the menu.
We selected three Chicken Tawa Ma Bhuteko Masu, two at Madras and one at Vindaloo strength, one Sherpa Chicken and one Chicken Saagwala all with a variety of rice and naan bread. The meals were served and we were presented with a complimentary chicken dish to try, which was fried chicken pieces in an Indo-Chinese sauce with onions and peppers.
All of the food was very tasty, freshly cooked, hot, well presented and was enjoyed by all.
The overall impression by our collective was that the food was better than average when judging against the many restaurants that we have had the pleasure of assessing in the county. Unfortunately though, it was a little pricier that some of it’s equals and even many of it’s higher scoring competitors, so this brought the scoring down a bit.
With Sainsbury’s next door there is no problem with parking as it is free for two hours there, but there is camera control, so don’t overstay your allotted time frame.
