This month’s pick was Gurkha Embassy in Syston, this restaurant situates in the centre of the town and one of two new Indian restaurants to open recently in Syston. The restaurant has had a full refurbishment and is very clean and smart however if we were to be picky, may be a little too bright and could do with being a little warmer. What we did like is there is plenty of room between the tables and you are not all sitting on each other’s table as happens so often these days.
We were greeted by the owner Sujan who always introduces himself, all the staff are very friendly and when we ordered our drinks the members particularly liked the Gurkha premium lager which is a full pint and ice cold – perfect!
We ordered the standard poppadoms with pickles which were great, a nice touch was that they served two trays of pickles without having to ask. We all ordered our food which was a Lamb Tawa Madras, one was great, one of our members felt although the Lamb was tender the heat over-powered the flavour, two chicken Tawa, one madras and one vindaloo which were good and the final meal was a Gurkha special dry fry fish which was well liked. All rice and naans were ordered and there was a particular shout out for the cheese and garlic naan.
On the whole the venue is very clean and the décor is tastefully done, the staff are friendly, the bar is well stocked, the beer is cold and the price was very reasonable. A Tawa at £7.25 is great value, the overall bill was £110 for 5 people, £22 a head including drinks which is remarkable value for money.
