We all headed for the Wyvern for our last 2019 Leicester Curry Club visit.
The Wyvern is a pub just off the Gypsy Lane in the Rushey Mead area of Leicester. The pub is still in business, but a part of it was converted only over 2 years ago into a dining experience. The pub is attached, and you eat in a separate area which is clean and fresh. The lighting is a bit over the top (too bright), but after 2 years the restaurant still appears in great condition regarding cleanliness and decor.
I chose this restaurant as it had been recommended to me by my son. After the delights of Octobers choice, the Chefs Flavours that was going to be the standout clear winner for 2019; surely the Wyvern would never come up to the standard of that establishment.
Our waiter was Jay and he was very attentive and knowledgeable about his range of beers and menu choices. We were given complimentary poppadoms which were also refreshed at no cost and the accompanying pickles were OK with a nice fresh onion and tomato salad.
We ordered for mains – a handi and naag the hottest mainstream dish ever created, a lamb tawa at madras strength, a chicken tawa at madras strength, a chicken chana saag which wasn’t on the menu but Jay said it could be done and a main of Lamb Chops. Naan’s were plain naan (no ghee or butter), 2 cheese and chilli and rice were boiled, veg and mushroom.
All of the food arrived within a couple of minutes of each other and what a delight! Wow. All dishes were absolutely 1st class. The member that likes it hot commented that it was the best curry he had ever experienced. The lamb chops (8) were unbelievable, again the nicest we’ve experienced and was accompanied by a Jalfrezi sauce (chargeable) which was lovely and fruity. Both tawa’s were excellent as was the chana saag. All rices were excellent as were the naans.
What a delight and what a gem. Of course this is inside a pub but still manages to give a restaurant feel and all members thought that they could return with their families without hesitation. The bill was unbelievable with the food coming out at £12 per head.
Well done to the owners, the chef and of course to Jay. We are delighted that we can reveal the winner for 2019 is the WYVERN !!
Your commendation will be delivered before Christmas.
