The July venue was selected and booked for what was expected to be another delightful evening of ambience, tantalising tastes and general good bonhomie. Unfortunately (apologies to Meatloaf, but) two out of three is bad, especially when the tantalising tastes is the one that’s missing!
Hannan’s restaurant on the corner of Narborough Road and Evesham Road came highly recommended and having studied their website, the extensive menu, the colourful photos of a variety of dishes and their promise of fine dining prepared by ‘the finest chef in the culinary world,’ it was an easy decision to book our table.
The restaurant is not licensed, but you are welcome to bring your own alcohol for which glasses are readily provided upon request. Parking was convenient and easy to find in Evesham Road and the staff were all keen to please and very friendly.
We booked for five on a Thursday evening and whilst we were not alone there were only two other tables occupied, one of which were finishing and left before we even placed our orders, so we were expecting efficient and attentive service.
The poppadom’s and relish trays arrived and we eagerly set about them, but were disappointed to find that they were not as fresh as would be expected and had lost their crispness.
For our main courses, we ordered two Chicken Biryanis, one normal and one Vindaloo with a side of coriander, one Chicken and one Lamb Tawa and one Lamb Lajawab all accompanied by one Mushroom Rice, one Pilau Rice, one Plain Naan, one Garlic and Coriander Naan and one Peshwari Naan.
The comments that came back to me were generally that the food was bland and lacking in any distinctive flavour. The Lamb Lajawab, was the one exception, which was tender pieces of succulent lamb in a very satisfying and mouth-watering sauce, which on its own was not enough to warrant redemption. The woes were added to by two of the three naan breads arriving late, the second one of which was as the main course was finished and was left untouched!
On the above basis we are struggling to recommend this establishment, but it could just have been an off night, so if you fancy the look of it, by all means give it a go and let us know how you found it.
