The July curry night was my turn and for the first time I tried to take us to a restaurant we previously visited 6 years ago, so a lesson learned as we near 100 Indian restaurants – check your score history before you book! So, we quickly decided we must change the venue and headed out to Ratby as a couple of the guys had heard good reports about a place called Harrisons Spice.
We knew it was a “bring your own” which wasn’t a problem as there was a Co-op local across the road with plenty of cold beer in the fridge.
On arrival we were met by the Manager Prem who provided a great service the whole night, guiding us through the menu and explaining the many dishes and how they could make us anything we wanted.
We ordered poppadoms and pickles and were given two trays of pickles between five of us whilst we browsed through the menu and made our choices. We ordered 2 Lamb chop Madras curries, Chicken Tawa, Harrisons Spice “special” and a Chicken Naga phaal accompanied with Saag rice, boiled rice, vegetable rice, plain naan, special naan and a garlic and cheese naan.
The Lamb chop dishes, which consisted of 4 chops, were made by special request. However, they were not traditional enough and unfortunately the sauce didn’t really work well. The Tawa was good but not a lot of chicken, the Harrisons Spice special was very good and the Naag phaal when ordered was “make it as hot as you can”. They definitely delivered on this, and it went down a treat!
One of our team always orders extra coriander, which for the first time he got without having to chase constantly.
In summary, the restaurant was clean and well presented, the staff were great, the Manager Prem looked after us well and it was an enjoyable night out. The bill was £83 for five of us with no alcohol, the 2 lamb dishes and the special were nearly £12 each so a little above what we would normally pay but nevertheless enjoyable.
