Last night was another little gem if you don’t mind a take your own alcohol restaurant, that’s on the possibly negative side a little basic and not dissimilar to a café, but on the positive side newly refurbished and sparklingly clean. The air conditioning was on, keeping it cool and comfortable, which although not strictly necessary last night, will be a boon if our long-awaited summer ever arrives with any sustained sunshine! However, we’re not here to talk about the weather, so on to the important stuff!
Yours truly, our host for the month, selected the Jann Café Restaurant at 264 Catherine Street, which those of our many readers who are better informed and curry house aficionados will know as the latest acquisition by the Blue Peter chain of restaurants adding to Blue Peter itself in Law Street and The Spicenick Bar and Grill at 189, Fosseway. We have previously visited these other restaurants and have always been more than satisfied with them so I was eagerly looking forward to enjoying the experience in their latest establishment. It’s fair to say that on the whole we were not disappointed.
We selected our dishes while we enjoyed the almost obligatory poppadum’s and pickle tray, which was plentiful and quickly replaced with a fresh one as we consumed its contents. We settled on the House on the Bone Lamb Curry Pot at Madras strength, Chicken Tawa at Madras strength, a Dry Fish dish, Chicken Tikka and a Garlic Chilli Minced Lamb Curry again at Madras strength all accompanied by plain rice, vegetable rice, garlic rice, plain naan, cheese, chilli and garlic naan and cheese and chilli naan.
The only criticisms arising were concerning the fish dish which our member found a little too salty for his taste and the minced lamb curry wasn’t quite as ‘spicy’ as the other Madras dishes, otherwise all comments were really positive. So, it was a most enjoyable and pleasant meal which more than satisfied. The portions were plentiful to the extent that we didn’t quite finish everything on the table between us.
In summary it was generally agreed that it was excellent value for money, the bill came to fractionally over fifty pounds for five of us, but remember we took our own alcoholic drinks, the service was excellent, the venue, as already mentioned is basic, but very acceptable if you’re going out for a good meal and not at all concerned about having salubrious surroundings and the menu is extensive providing a generous choice of dishes even to the extent of featuring an Indo-Chinese selection if that takes your fancy. Being the Leicester Curry Club, that area was off limits to us last night!
