This month marked the occasion of our 100th visit and review. Quite an achievement and there are still lots on the list to visit! We’ve enjoyed getting to this landmark!

There was an air of expectation for this event, and it fell to me to chose where to go. I had a couple of places in mind, but The Flying Horse in Markfield sounded good, looks nice and has excellent reviews from others.

I booked online and had email confirmation very quickly for the booking.

On arrival, there wasn’t much of a greeting, but our table was ready and we were pointed in the right direction. To be honest, the reception could have been done better and more warmly.

It was a very nice table; the restaurant is very well made up and furnished as you can see in one of the photos in the gallery. Being an ex-pub, there was lots of choice for draft beers and bottled Cobra Zero as a non-alcoholic choice.

The usual popadoms were ordered, which were fresh and not greasy; together with a pickle tray with the usual condiments — a good start.

Between us, we ordered the Chicken Tawa and Chicken Korai. And from the Chefs specials, the Parsi Sali Lamb Curry and Zul Zula Chicken. (Upon checking the online and takeaway menu we can’t find the Parsi dish).

The Chicken Tawa was madras strength; the menu points out that has mincemeat – the waiter confirmed that the Chicken version would have both chicken breast and a chicken and lamb mince mix with it. Our member enjoyed it being a little different to usual.

I asked for the Korai to be very hot, and it was – nicely done with fresh chillis and spices rather than just curry powder added. Very good.

All the dishes had a home cooked flavour, although the addition of whole spices such as cardamom pods and kernels should have been taken out before serving our group felt.

A couple of Naga Naans and a plain naan were also enjoyed, although the plain naan initially came with butter despite being ordered without butter.

Overall the food was delicious; the hospitality tonight let the restaurant down – the manager didn’t appear to want to be there and made little effort to host us. The waiters themselves were friendly enough; however, based on this, the scoring was affected somewhat. It could have been a top scorer otherwise.
