Memory Lane, Leicester LE1 3UL
36/40
One of the greatest things about the Leicester Curry Club is that every now and again you find a hidden gem, and we certainly did on Wednesday. Chef’s Flavour is off Belgrave Gate on Memory Lane just after the Empire Banqueting & Conference Hall with ample parking, which is usually a problem.
I was recommended this restaurant by a friend of my wife’s and when I looked at the reviews it looked very interesting, with one review even stating they went back the next night. This sounded like our kind of restaurant and it didn’t let us down. We entered Chef’s Flavour and were immediately greeted and shown to our table by a friendly waiter. The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere about it with a lot of customers in for a Wednesday night which is always a good sign.
We ordered drinks, Cobra on draft and a bottle of Cobra Zero, not all restaurants serve none alcoholic beer so this was a result. We were then given complementary papadoms and pickles, we also ordered more papadoms as we tend to like two each and they were also complimentary and served with another pickle tray. The waiter asked if we would like to discuss the menu with the chef which is always a nice touch. Suresh (the chef & co-founder) came to the table introduced himself and took us through our choices and added his touch to each order, even to one request that was not on the menu. We ordered a Chicken Saagwala, 2x Hari Mirch Ka Ghost, 1 Laal Maas and a Chicken Tower (madras) we also ordered cheese naan, Peshawari naan, chilli coriander naan, steam rice, jeera rice and a peas pulao rice. Suresh asked if this was our first visit as he would like us to try a couple of his chef’s specials. With his compliments we were sent crispy fried aubergines and a salt & pepper fish, which were both fantastic. To be honest, the whole food order was spot on with flavours to match; nothing was forgotten even the statutory extra coriander.
We all agreed this was one of the best meals we had ever had and going by the score it is the joint highest scorer in the 8 years we have been doing these reviews. I am sure this will be the 2019 Leicester Curry Club winner but who knows- that is the fun of it all. The bill was £111 between 5 of us which is the usual, we also were offered a complimentary drink so it was brandy’s all-round, a great finish to a great experience. We will definitely be back!
