This month we found a new “back street” pub-style Indian Restaurant – The Durham Ox at the end of Catherine Street. The team running the old Wyvern Arms has taken over and run the kitchen.
I tied to book a few times before going, but they are always busy, and there is no online booking, so we chanced it on a Thursday night. Parking was challenging – but this was a good sign as it was busy.
For drinks, you have to get these from the bar yourself. There was a good atmosphere. One thought it had poor seating allowing drinkers and diners to be in the same area. I was there for the food, and it didn’t disappoint.
Our order was
Popadoms (£1 each) and two pickle trays (£1.20 each)
Chicken Jalfrezi
Fish Karahi
Gurkali Lamb
Chicken on the Bone Karahi
Mushroom Rice Peshewari Naan and plain Naan.
Food was excellent. My Jalfrezi was perfect and tasted freshly cooked from scratch. Positive feedback included a great atmosphere and decent service.
I’ve already recommended this place to people and look forward to hearing about their experiences and returning myself.
In conclusion, the food is excellent, but this isn’t a date night destination but sits up there with Paddy Martin, Woolpack pub-style Curry Houses.
