Julys nominated restaurant was the Royal Leicester in Lockerbie Walk in Rushey Mead. An easy destination with plenty of parking.
We arrived at 7.15pm and was greeted by an empty restaurant and the very nice and welcoming owner who explained about the history of the establishment and the bespoke selection of the 3 chefs.
We ordered drinks at the bar from a very good selection of draught beers.
We were seated for about 30 mins and had to ask poppadom’s and 2 pickle trays. A normal request for a pre main course starter. The poppadom’s were fresh, but we had to wait at least 25 minutes before they were served.
We ordered the mains, a Boneless Sizzler, a Chicken Madras, a Fish Tawa, a Chicken Jalfrezi and the Masala Lamb Chops.
The wait for the mains really was very long. All members remarked that we would have left if they were not so hungry. Although we didn’t get a definitive time it really was approximately a 45-minute wait with an empty restaurant!
The Chicken Jalfrezi was green with very few vegetables (Onion & Peppers) and the Lamb Chops were pretty tough and the sauce that was ordered with it not particularly to our member’s taste. The Fish Tawa was only OK and the Chicken Madras was judged by the member that requested it as mediocre. The boneless Sizzler was judged by the member as a 6 out of 10.
The 3 different Nans that were ordered were good as was the boiled and Vegetable rice.
The whole evening was somewhat overshadowed by the lengthy wait for the poppadom’s and the main course. The owner was extremely pleasant and very informative about his establishment but with an empty restaurant the lengthy wait for the food really did detract from the enjoyment of the evening.
If the food had been top notch when it arrived, then the wait could have just been acceptable, but most members were somewhat disappointed.
