We returned to What a Shot after more than three years, having heard that a new team had taken over the kitchen—headed by the same chef from Broadway on Abbey Lane—so we had high expectations. We were certainly not disappointed.
Located on a trading estate in Thurmaston, the venue forms part of a larger complex featuring artificial football and cricket pitches, a gymnasium, a children’s soft play area, and an impressive Indian restaurant.
On entering What a Shot, the first thing that strikes you is how clean, modern, and stylish the space is. There’s a huge bar, plenty of seating, TVs throughout, and even a director’s lounge. If you get the chance, ask for a tour—it’s genuinely impressive.
The staff clearly enjoy what they do, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere. This is easily one of the largest Indian restaurants we’ve visited, and it was packed even on a Thursday night.
Their online booking system has been updated and is now extremely user-friendly, with confirmation texts and timely reminders.
We were greeted by our waiter, who was great fun, and ordered Cruzcampo—served ice cold and perfect. The beer selection is extensive. Poppadom’s and pickle trays arrived quickly and were excellent.
For our mains we ordered:
- Gurkhali Chicken (hot)
- Garlic Chilli Chicken (hot)
- Lamb Biryani (medium)
- Surf & Turf Sizzler (shared between two), which includes Chicken Tikka, Haryali Chicken Wings, Kebabs, Lamb Chops, Fish, and Prawns. We have never seen a platter so large—you truly must see it to believe it.
We also ordered the usual selection of naans and rice.
In summary, the food was excellent, the service superb, and the overall experience outstanding. What a Shot is well worth a visit. The bill was £136 for 5 people inc a £12 service charge, which we were happy to pay.
A quick heads-up: there is a large car park around the back. Avoid parking out front, as it’s all double yellow lines—one of our members received a ticket at 8 p.m.
